By making Burning Man popular, will it loose its edge?

Friends of mine ahave been to Burning Man and described incredable things: men and women having sex for all to see, crazy art installations, drugs, and lots and lots of guns. This event isn't for everybody, or shouldn't be. I fear making Burning Man "open source" will kill the very spirit of like minded people comming together to rebel against the status quo. My problem with universality is that it seems to be the lithium of society, by which I mean it lowers the highs and hightens the lows. We are a manic society, lets keep it that way.

A network that has transformed our built environment is consumerism. We live to buy, and must stay up to date on the latest product to drool over. This takes advirtising everywhere. From plasma screens at the supermarket to pop-ups on your computer screen, we are always being told what to crave next. This network works on the macro level in T.V. or airplane banners, or the micro level by word of mouth. No matter how it gets to you, there is no real way to avoid it. Consumerism has shaped our airports, roads and even our houses- TYVEK Home Wrap for example. Although our actual homes still stay mostly autonomous, it is just another market to advirtise on as soon as someone finds a way to do it.
